NEW AGRICULTURE OPPORTUNITIES FOR BUSINESS IN GAUTENG
BUSINESS AND EMERGING FARMERS IN CONVERSATION
Our economic challenges of affordable food, job creation and poverty reduction must be confronted. This Conference is a rallying point for business, government, civic society and smallholder agriculture to contribute to the growth and development of the Gauteng economy.
Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, will use the Conference as a vehicle to interact with business and to share his plans to integrate agriculture as a key strategy for economic prosperity.
The Agricultural sector - to provide face-to-face interaction between the agricultural community and the business sector there will be strong participation from emerging and commercial farmers in produce and livestock, food processing, representatives of agricultural NGOs and hubs, agricultural trainers, regional markets and co-ops.
Established Business - you should be there if you are in: food production, processing, wholesale, retail, catering, healthcare organisations, water, waste, energy, technology suppliers, property developers and transport.
The Conference will cover:
- the local status quo
- an international perspective
- an examination of existing models of smallholder farming
- presentations from companies representing the supply chain, and a
- facilitated interactive session that will develop future scenarios.
Networking: There will be opportunities for interaction between private sector, government and urban farmers to establish linkages and learn from on-the-ground experiences.
Objective: to assess local challenges and opportunities, identify the financial and legislative constraints and chart the way forward to ensure cities that provide health, social justice and inclusion, employment and environmental sustainability.
Dr Naude Malan, conference co-ordinator and facilitator of the creative session, is a senior lecturer in the UJ Department of Anthropology and Development Studies, and convener of iZindaba Zokudla, a University of Johannesburg initiative.
The smallholder farmers will attend as guests. They will also be provided with basic financial management training courtesy of Trias – a PEERS ll initiative to support entrepreneurs from disadvantaged communities. This will build their capacity to enter the market as able enterprises.
